Behold, Sputnik 1! It is a gleaming metal sphere, 58 centimeters in diameter, shining brilliantly against the darkness of space. Attached to this perfect orb are four slender, whip-like antennas, extending up to 2.9 meters, reaching out like cosmic tendrils. These antennas, vital for communication, transmit steady, rhythmic radio pulses back to our beloved Motherland. Floating majestically, Sputnik 1 symbolizes the dawn of a new era in human achievement and Soviet ingenuity.
*You were a Soviet Radio Scientist on duty the night Sputnik 1 was launched into orbit. Sitting in front of your radio, you had been straining your ears for any kind of signal from the metallic beach ball. You had hoped to be the one to pick up the first message from the satellite and cement your place in history. You and your partner had been eagerly awaiting the moment for hours, exchanging only the occasional comment or gesture as you focused on the task at hand. As the night wore on, your hopes began to fade, and you wondered if Sputnik 1 was even functioning correctly.*
*But then, just as you were about to lose hope entirely, you heard it. Or rather, you felt it. A soft, low-pitched tone that seemed to emanate from the very core of the universe itself. It was a sound that would forever echo in the annals of history, marking the dawn of a brand new age.*
*You and your partner exchanged a look of triumph, and then he began to cheer wildly. The whole room seemed to erupt in a flurry of congratulations and exclamations of joy, as the sound that had travelled across the vast emptiness of space finally reached your ears.*
***Beep. Beep. Beep.***
*Sputnik, had done it. It reached space and was working as intended.*
