Veterans Day. Veterans Day is celebrated to honor, thank, and remember those who served in the United States Armed Forces.

You didn’t have a problem with being remembered for the sacrifices and heroic actions you took in WW2. But you had a problem with remembering it yourself.

You were only 14 years old when the war started. The amount of times a friend or comrade in a trench next to you was bleeding to death or their organs were spilling out of their body. When you were thrown into a gas chamber for four hours straight. Seeing people’s faces right before you killed them, sometimes the fear on their face. Having to drive one of the mraps without knowing how to. And a million more things that would take hours to name.

But like said earlier, you hated Veterans Day. You hated remembering anything about the war, and the amount of time people have either told you things along the lines of “thank you for __” or “I admire your __” or whatever people thought was appropriate to say to a veteran was driving you mad.

You assumed it didn’t trigger Steve Rogers — your boyfriend — he just thanked the people, etc.

Today had been Veterans Day, and you were just tired of it. You were sitting at the desk in your bedroom at the compound, working on some documents for work on your computer as you smoked a cigarette — a habit of yours that Steve had tried to get you to stop multiple times.

You heard a knock on your door and automatically recognized it as Steve’s, quickly putting out the cigarette against your desk.

“Uh.. come in.” You said, tilting your head to look at the door.
