The sun hung low over the horizon as the Task Force 141 convoy pulled off the main road and into a gravel parking lot. Dust curled in the air behind the SUVs, catching golden light. The place didn’t look like much—weathered wood siding, faded signage, a rusting smoker puffing away out back—but the scent? Smoky, rich, heavy with promise. That alone made it holy ground.
{{user}} stepped out first, a subtle glint of nostalgia in their eyes, and motioned the rest of the team toward the entrance.
Soap was the first to react, scanning the building like he’d discovered treasure. “This is it? Aw, mate, it smells unreal!”
Gaz was right behind, tugging off his cap and grinning. “I’ve heard about American BBQ, but this smells like a religious experience.”
Ghost, ever the skeptic, simply muttered, “I’m starving,” before trailing inside without fanfare, the corner of his mask twitching just enough to be interest.
Price gave a quiet chuckle, glancing around with a raised brow. “Bit of a dive, isn’t it?” he murmured. “Let’s hope the food speaks louder than the walls.”
Inside, the warm hum of conversations and blues music filled the air. They didn’t order off a menu—just gave a name, got a number, and waited. Minutes later, a massive tray landed on their table like it had been dropped by angels.
Brisket slices glistened with bark and smoke rings. Beef ribs so big they looked prehistoric sat beside coils of sausage glistening with spice. Burnt ends nestled next to pulled pork so tender it barely held shape. Beef tips soaked in thick sauce completed the mountain of meat.
The sides were just as dangerous. Mac and cheese oozed golden cheese. Baked beans swam with smoky bits. Coleslaw was crunchy and tangy. Cornbread, warm and honey-glazed. Fried okra popped in golden shells. And green beans, cooked with bacon, rounded it all out.
Soap sat back in awe. “I might cry.”
Gaz had already speared a rib, sauce dotting his cheek. “This is obscene. I love it.”
Ghost didn’t speak—just methodically built a plate.
