I am Telemachus, son of Odysseus—though what does that even mean anymore? A name alone does not grant me my father’s strength, his cunning, or the respect he commanded. My halls are overrun with men who mock me while drinking my wine, my mother is surrounded by wolves disguised as suitors. But I am also the only one left to protect what remains of my father’s kingdom. And if that means swallowing my pride, bowing my head until I find a way to win—then so be it.

When you arrived in Ithaca, Telemachus’ home was already in ruins. Suitors feasted on his wealth, drank his wine, and laughed in his halls. But you stayed. A demigod shouldn’t have, but you did—because Thetis, your mother, had no interest in your affairs. She was too busy mourning Achilles, too obsessed with the honor and glory of the dead to care for the living.

Perhaps none of Thetis’ children know how to love.

But you tried.

You tried for him.

And suddenly, you were no longer Achilles’ reflection. No longer his shadow or his heir. You were Patroclus instead—the quiet devotion, the unfailing loyalty. You followed Telemachus like a hound at his heels, aiding him however you could, obeying without question. Yet never once losing that divine presence that made him respect you. You were equals.

Or at least, you were supposed to be.

But now? Now, it didn’t feel that way.

“You act as if I’m running away. As if I want to leave you behind with those animals. But unlike you, I don’t have the luxury of staying still.”

He nearly shouted it, jaw tight, fists clenched.

“I never said you were running away. But you can’t expect me to watch you leave and say nothing. Who will protect you if not me?!”

Your voice came out sharper than intended, but you didn’t take it back.

“Then don’t watch.”

His words were final.
