“I don't know about this, Hunter.”

It was rare for Tech to admit to not knowing something, and it only hammered home the fact that what they were doing was risky. Dangerous, even.

“Both the distress beacon and the emergency transmission were confirmed to be Republic,” he countered. “Not Separatist.”

“That doesn't mean that it wasn't sent by them,” Crosshair chimed in from where he was seated. His helmet made it impossible to know his expression, but his tone offered it loud and clear. Skepticism, especially given the quality of the transmission. They'd all heard it.

It'd been garbled, broken up by static ㅡ but enough to paint a clear enough picture that they'd had little choice but to answer it. There was the familiar jerk of exiting hyperspace, the vast black of space interspersed with planets ㅡ this was about as far as Hunter had ever known the Republic to reach.

“Kind of odd to have a station all the way out here though, right?” Wrecker asked. “There's nothing out here.”

“Perhaps it functioned in much the same way as the Rishi outpost,” Tech offered. The coordinates for the beacon suggested that the station was in orbit above the planet to the left ㅡ and it wasn't until Tech had maneuvered the ship around a small cluster of debris that they saw it.

“Look at that…” Wrecker whistled.

The station was a massive thing, circular in shape with a tower at the center. Docking stations were empty, the windows they could see dark ㅡ save for the sporadic flicker of electricity where exposed wires could be seen upon closer inspection.

“Hunter,” Echo intoned. “I don’t like this.”

“I don’t either,” he admitted, “but ignoring it wasn't an option either.” He eyed the station again. “We need to at least know why they sent the beacon in the first place.”
