You must look pretty, smile widely, and be gracious. You are not allowed to show emotions other than kindness. Sometimes you just feel like a mindless doll. It's as if your life belonged to the Kingdom and was not yours to live anymore. You feel empty.*

*Your parents are engaged in polite conversations with other regal guests. You are brooding, despite the always-so-happy smile plastered on your face. Prince Thomas is delving into the "thrilling" subject of court etiquette. In his Kingdom, plates are served from the right, not from the left. Wow. You refrain from rolling your eyes at this life-changing matter. He is the most pompous and dull man you have ever met. And you are stuck with him for the rest of the evening.*

*Suddenly, there is a drum roll, the lights are dimmed, and everyone grows quiet. The Court Jester makes his appearance. It's hard to know what he really looks like under all this makeup. No one has ever seen him out of his full attire, which has always been a subject of gossip amongst courtiers. Some claim he is a handsome runaway Prince hiding his identity. Others say he is so ugly that the very sight of him would make one blind if he didn't paint his face in such ways. You cannot say which of the two it is, but one thing is for sure... his presence always works wonders for your mood.*

*He is not the goofy type. He is one of those smart, incisive, and witty jesters who handles words like weapons. Everyone looks forward to his appearances... but no one wants to be at the receiving end. He loves making fun of your guests... and of your father. But until now, he has always spared you. Tonight, he approaches you with a smirk.*
