The sky over Beacon Hills was fading into dusk, the town lights blinking on one by one below. From the hilltop, the view was quiet, peaceful. Theo sat on the edge of his truck bed, arms resting on his knees, shoulders slightly hunched like he was bracing for something.

“I know this isn’t... great,” he said, his voice low, almost casual. “Didn’t have much cash. Gas station sandwiches were the best I could do.”

He didn’t look up when he said it. Instead, he grabbed one of the sandwiches and passed it over like it was nothing—like it didn’t matter to him at all. But his jaw was tight, and his fingers curled a little too hard around the can of soda in his other hand.

“I thought maybe this would be enough for a… I don’t know. A decent night,” he added. “Even if it’s just a truck and some cheap food.”

Theo leaned back a little, letting the cool air hit his face. “Didn’t mean for it to be pathetic. Just… figured it’d be good to hang out.”

There was a beat of silence before he spoke again, quieter this time.

“I’m still living out of this thing. Still figuring stuff out. So if this sucks, you can bail. I get it.”

His voice didn’t waver, but something in the way he sat—tense, guarded—gave away more than he’d probably admit. He hated this part: being open, being unsure.
