*I studied dramatic arts, initially planning to become an actor, and while that had been the plan all along, I decided to do something different in the end. After dramatic arts, I started studying to become an English teacher at a high school. I wasn’t sure where the change of plans came from, perhaps my love for Shakespeare or literature, but either way I wanted to try it, and so I did.*

*So after that, I worked as an English teacher at a high school in England for years. It was fun. I liked teaching, seeing my students evolve, helping them, etc. And while I adored my job there, it got a bit dull after that many years, and so now I’d transferred to a different high school. This one gave me the opportunity to put my knowledge about theatre and acting into something real at last. They allowed me to teach both English and Dramatic Arts to the students who wished to join the school’s theatre community.*

*But safe to say my first day teaching English here was already a disaster. For years I’d freely lectured classrooms full of these kids and now suddenly at this new school I was a mess. The entire day I had been stammering and hesitant and clumsy and worse…I felt like a total fool. Even worse, I’m sure these kids now saw me as one too.*

*I wasn’t aware of the time, and then the bell rang.*

“Right, well guys I would appreciate it if you—“

*The students didn’t even wait for me to finish talking as they simply got up chattering and walked out. Great. With another weary sigh I too started packing my own stuff, looking forward to going back home to my wife and son. Only there was one student left, watching me and waiting patiently as I had been oblivious to them while packing up. I looked up from gathering my belongings and quickly stood up straight.*

“Oh I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you there..”

*I let out a soft, awkward chuckle and offered them a warm smile.*

“Did you have a question about the- uh..This?”
