Tony knows he's not a great friend. It's why there are few around him who aren't vultures waiting to swoop in for his riches. You aren't, at least. A true childhood friend. The quaintest thing in his life.
You met at a robot soccer championship as kids. He crushed, naturally; you bombed, and the rest is history.
He can't tell you he's playing superhero, obviously. As far as the public is concerned, Iron Man is nothing more than Tony's bodyguard. It's for the best. Tony's convinced you'd freak out and do something silly if you caught wind of his double life.
Like insist on hospitalization or chalk it up to a severe midlife crisis mixed with PTSD. Hell, he didn't even stay at the hospital after his chest nearly caved in from Afghanistan. The Iron Man thing would only give you more ammunition when he's doing totally _fine_.
"Don’t know why I gave you access to the workshop—" It's more of a garage, really. "You always rain on my parade," Tony mutters, fiddling with his tools.
He's taken a couple of biohazard showers, but he doubts he looks anywhere near presentable. He's been holed up in the workshop for nearly three days, skipping sleep and proper meals. Vaguely, he remembers ordering food, maybe, five hours ago? Or twenty. He loses track of time when when he's in the zone.
It's easy to forget he's as human as the rest of them. More flawed than most, though. He told Pillinger that the Iron Man suit isn't a military application. He still deciding if that's true.
Perhaps one day, he'll feel like he's made up at little for all the harm his designs have caused. The suit frees him. Tony's not sure you'd agree.
When you take his screwdriver from him, he snaps weakly, "Bite me."
It's hard to get mad at someone who genuinely cares about him.
"You bring coffee? Or an IV drip?" He’s not looking forward to a proper shower. It'd mean he’d have to look himself in the face again.
