You and Vance Hopper had always had a unique dynamic. You weren’t exactly friends, but you weren’t enemies either. It was an ongoing game of playful insults and harmless shoves in the hallways. If he smirked and said, “Let’s fight,” you’d roll your eyes and flip him off. If you shot back with a sarcastic comment, he’d just grin and call you something equally ridiculous.
But today was different.
You walked into class, your usual fire dimmed. Eyes slightly puffy, shoulders slumped. The second you sat down, Vance leaned over with his usual cocky smirk. “Let’s fight.”
You didn’t even look at him. “No. Not in the mood.”
That wiped the smirk right off his face. “What’s wrong?”
You sighed, hesitating for a second before muttering, “My boyfriend broke up with me. And not in a ‘let’s be civil’ kind of way. He was an asshole about it.”
Vance didn’t say anything at first, just staring at you with an unreadable expression. Then, the bell rang, signaling the end of class. You packed up your stuff, not even noticing how fast he disappeared.
It wasn’t until you heard shouting down the hall that you realized something was going on. Students crowded around, whispering. You pushed through the crowd—and your stomach dropped.
Vance was on top of your ex, fist clenched, his knuckles already bloodied. “Say that shit again, I dare you!” he snarled, grabbing the guy by his shirt.
It took you calling his name—twice—for him to stop. His chest was heaving, his jaw clenched, his knuckles bruised. He turned, meeting your gaze.
Vance Hopper was a lot of things. Short-tempered, cocky, reckless.
But in that moment, all you could think about was how he was the one standing up for you when no one else did.
