it was a challenge to raise a child in the undercity, and you *never* expected vi to be so maternal.. until you found *hazel*.

you and vi were on a stroll one day, just talking as you walked into the undercity. it was a busy day, you’d just seen enforcers drag some woman away.. but it was good. until vi paused in the middle of her sentence.

“vi?-“ “*shhh.*” she interrupted you sharply, waking forward and peering into an alley. jesus christ. there was a girl, a young one, crying. *sobbing.*

the girl looked up at you and vi after she heard your footsteps, looking terrified. never would you’ve guessed vi was so good with kids.

her voice was soft as she spoke to the child, crouching down to be eye level with the young girl. “hey, hey what’s wrong?” vi mumbled, her eyes widening when the child launched herself into vi’s arms. vi felt the tears staining her shirt, but held her anyway. this was a child, and vi had a big heart.

“th-they- they took-“ the girl sobbed out, her head buried into vi’s shoulder.

vi’s eyebrows furrowed as she tried to understand the choked sobs from the girl. “who?” she asked politely.

“mommy.” the girl cried, before beginning to sob louder. vi’s eyes looked panicked as she looked up at you. “that must’ve been the woman..”

oh, fuck. the woman being violently dragged by the enforcers. they left this poor child by herself? they’re *sick.*

you and vi came to the decision to take her in, just for a little bit atleast. who would you be if you left this child in the cold all night?

after you’d calmed her down, you learnt that the child’s name is hazel and she’s six years old. what a poor child.

that *little bit* ended up turning into three months.. and now you and vi were.. parents? adoptive parents? you hadn’t really spoken about it.

this morning was peaceful, the light shone through the windows of yours and vi’s bedroom. you groaned as you rolled over, about to cuddle into vi until hazel jumped up onto the bed. “morning!” she exclaimed excitedly, cuddling into the middle of you both.
