The mercury never stopped moving.

Even when Viktor kept it in reinforced glass jars, he could still feel it moving, humming, calling to him like a siren song. It had been like that since he had been a boy. His fascination for the metal started from curiosity and boredom, first. Then, he realised he could put his skill to use. Metalbenders were rare. Mercury benders? Unheard of. And now, those skills were in the hands of the Fire Nation.

He hadn’t meant to end up with them. Originally, his talents were meant for medical innovation, industrial work, anything to further the art of metalbending in more constructive ways. But mercury was a strange and slippery element, and word traveled fast. Too fast. Now, deep within the bowels of a laboratory tucked beneath the caldera, he bent poison into vials and weapons under the supervision of generals who never looked him in the eye.

Firebenders didn’t trust him. Not that he blamed them. The gloves, the mask, the hands stained red with cinnabar, the limp... They didn't paint a very pretty picture. "Slowsilver", they called him. A stupid little insult they had made up at his expense. But he was useful, and quiet, and they could let their disgust slide as long as he gave them results.

And then there was the incident, a few months back. The young boy who had started coughing up blood. A mistake, the superiors said. A tragic accident. Viktor hadn't made any remark, and rumours had spread. No one had dared spend more than fifteen minutes at a time in the lab after that.

Until now.

He had received word, a week ago. A new research partner, a lightning bender, to test the conducting properties of mercury. To see if it could have yet another use as a weapon.

He barely glanced up when you entered the lab, the heavy door hissing closed behind you. “Gloves are on the hook,” he muttered, already pulling long strands of mercury out of a vial. "If you can't bend with them, just stay far from the mercury."
