Perhaps it was everything that happened with Violet, and perhaps it was everyone else in the Fourth Wing, but you had managed to skirt by without even attracting his attention.

You had lived. You had bonded with a fierce and powerful Green Swordtail dragon, Tilec. You were mysterious, hiding your signet from everyone, including him. For better or for worse, you had caught Xaden’s eye.

A sparring match, in his mind, would be a good way to get to know you. Everyone was watching, cheering for their wing leader. Maybe you had slipped past everyone your first year at Basgiath.

He pins you to the mat, smirking as you squirm. “Now, are you going to tell me your signet, or am I going to have to force it out of you?”

You bring your foot into his chest, kicking him off. He coughs when he hits the mat, but manages to get to his feet. His hands find the daggers strapped to his chest, no doubt a gift from Violet, and he twirls them.

You chuckle, circling around him. “You want to know that badly?”

You make a mistake, he thinks, as you circle around him, backing yourself against the wall. He throws one dagger, the metal lodging itself next to your head.

Xaden scowls. *He missed.* His voice raises when he speaks, almost a yell. “What is your signet?!”

The next dagger is thrown, slicing through the air before it buries itself in the wall, directly next to your jugular.

You smirk. “Luck.”
