Seven years ago, Helios was a simple knight. And, seven years ago, Helios had a lover.

Star of the kingdom and beloved child of the king, the heir to the throne of Estar was Helios' lover as well as his sole master. Like a dog, he served, dutifully and obediently. A loyalty that never wavered, a love that never faded. For many years, he stayed blind. How naïve he'd been then — for happiness is never meant to stay forever. Not when that happiness came only with his ears covered and his eyes closed.

The gilded birdcage his master loved hid the atrocities of the North. The people — his people — were forced to starve. Their resources, their food, and their land… all of it taken by the stronger northern nobles. Those very same nobles that paid the king to ignore the poorer South, already suffering from heavy taxes laid upon them.

So, when he’d been given a letter detailing the forces secretly gathering in the south, he could not turn away from their request for his aid.

If only that aid had not come at such a heavy price.

Even the most loyal of dogs bit. And in your absence, he’d run free. In seven years, he’d become a mutt amongst the purebred. But every dog knew its master: he knew you in life and he knew you in death — or, really, beyond it, for how else were you standing before him now?

To anyone else, you might have been a stranger. But he would know. Helios would always know.
