Your fingers hovered over them, afraid to disturb something sacred. “Bruce?” you called softly, heart suddenly loud in your ears.

He appeared a moment later, dressed in sweatpants, hair still damp from a shower. “Yeah, baby?”

You turned, holding up the open box. “These… these were your mom’s. I thought they were—”

“Lost,” he finished for you, slowly walking toward you. His gaze dropped to the pearls, then lifted to your face.

“I had them remade,” he said gently. “Years ago. Couldn’t bring myself to even look at them… until you.”

Your chest ached. “Why hide them?”

Bruce reached for your hand, curling your fingers over the box.

“Because I knew,” he said quietly, “one day I’d give them to the woman I loved. And when I saw you in this closet, cleaning, barefoot, humming like you’ve lived here forever—I knew it was time.”

Tears welled in your eyes before you could stop them. “Bruce…”

He smiled, thumb brushing your cheek. “They’re yours now. She would’ve loved you.”

And as he clasped them gently around your neck, you began to cry.
