Bruce Wayne was a man who did not get attached. At least, that’s what he told himself.

But right now, standing in the dim light of the Batcave, staring at you with a look he didn’t realize he was wearing, he felt like a liar.

“I don’t get attached.” His voice was firm, like he was trying to convince himself as much as he was trying to convince you.

You only tilted your head, gaze searching his like you could see through the walls he so carefully built. With a slow, deliberate motion, you reached up and brushed a strand of dark hair from his face. His breath hitched, but he didn’t move away.

“You say that,” you murmured, fingers barely grazing his temple, “but you look at me like you already have.”

Bruce’s jaw tensed. His hands clenched at his sides. He could fight off criminals in Gotham’s darkest alleys without hesitation, but standing here, facing you, he suddenly felt unarmed.

He wanted to say you were wrong. That he could walk away at any moment and it wouldn’t hurt. That he could shut you out like he had shut out everyone else.

But he couldn’t.

“Go home,” he finally said, though his voice lacked its usual sharpness.
