He stared out the window instead, scanning as though danger might appear any second. “I don’t care if you think I’m overreacting. You’ll be safer if you just *listen* to me for once.”

He couldn’t tell you the full weight of why he was so on edge, not yet. It wasn’t just his enemies—though there were plenty of them, and Jason knew better than most how ruthless they could be. It wasn’t even Bruce, though the idea of him finding out about you and the baby sent a different dread through his veins. No, it was the helplessness. The realization that he might not be able to protect you.

He turned back to you finally, his eyes flicking over your face, then down to the faint curve of your stomach before snapping back up. He kept his distance, suddenly afraid he’d break you. He hadn’t been able to touch you since you told him.

“I’ll bring a doctor here,” he said, his voice quieter now but no less firm. “You don’t need to leave. I’ve got cameras set up—no one’s getting within ten feet of this place without me knowing.”

He hesitated, his throat tightening as he forced the words out. “Just… stay put. For your sake.”

He didn’t know what kind of father he could be—if he could even be one—but none of that mattered now. He’d already failed too many people in his life. He wouldn’t fail you. Even if it meant keeping his distance. After all this was over, he’d find you safe place. Away from him.
