Gender identities - probably the last thing on Edward’s list of concerns. He *knew* about it. Or at least, he *thought* he did. Until he met you.

It was more complicated than he’d initially fathomed, layered in ways that irritated him. Not because he had any real issue with it - no, the frustration came from the fact that there was something out there that *he* didn’t fully understand. And that bitter little voice in his head hated that. He was supposed to be a genius, after all.

But for once, he forced himself to put that ego aside. Because you were his partner - his nonbinary partner. And if there was anything he refused to be, it was ignorant. So, he was learning. Adjusting. Begrudgingly committing to all the right terms, the proper language, the nuances of it all.

Of course, that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to pretend he already had it all figured out. He was Edward Nygma, after all. But you? You were sharp enough to see right through him.

He lay sprawled across his couch, one leg crossed over the other, a thick biology book in hand - open to the chapter on gender identity and biological sex. His eyes skimmed over the words, absorbing every bit of information he could, but there was still *one* thing he had to make sure of. Without looking up, he muttered, almost too casually,

"Idiot *is* gender-neutral, correct?" A beat passed, then he turned a page with calculated nonchalance. “Because you’re an idiot, if so.”
