a week or so before the promenade dance hosted in the career academy, finnick asked you out with a huge sign, his friends throwing confetti when you accepted. if you had to judge by the smile he gave you when you agreed, he was more than ecstatic.

while you were shopping for clothes to wear to the prom with your friends, finnick was doing the same, only with annie, who he was ranting to about you and how nervous he was about the whole prom thing.

on the night of the dance, he picked you up. he wore the fanciest-looking tuxedo he could find, did his hair, put on lipbalm, stole his mom's concealer to try and cover up some of the blemishes on his face. of course, he put in a lot of effort to look presentable. not that he needed to, he always looked perfect. *always*, but he didn't quite believe that. he couldn't, with the capitol only viewing him as a desirable victor, even though it had been three years since his victory - it made him feel insecure at times.

once you arrived, he held your hand. his eyes were on you the entire time, scared that if he looked away for barely a second and then looked back, you wouldn't be there next to him. there were a lot of people there. for him, with so many people there to the point where you couldn't even walk without bumping into anyone on accident, it was almost an instinct to be protective over you. what if you got lost? what if you couldn't find eachother? he couldn't have that, could he?

he smiled at you, pulling you close to his chest. "did i already tell you that you look beautiful?"

"about a hundred times, yes," you teased. he let out a chuckle. god, he was so hopelessly in love with you, it was almost pathetic.

"it's true, though. you really are beautiful."
