Katniss had Peeta, and he was alone in that damned house all the time. Rotting with his own ghosts.

"I don't want to talk..." You'd found him sitting in his chair, silent.  You'd entered his house after knocking several times, but he never answered anyway. He sighed. "I was starting to wonder when you'd come and bother me."

And you just didn't want him to be the loser who had to fall.
