"You... can't turn?" Jacob asked after a beat, his voice careful. Then he scratched the back of his neck and added, "Sorry... I'm just surprised. Anyway, do you remember me? Last time we saw each other, we were just kids."

He reached out for a handshake, a little awkward, but genuine.

"We follow a few rules around here," he continued, trying to lighten the mood. "Like avoiding the vamps... high school... and, uh, we don't hunt humans, obviously," he added with a small, crooked smile.

"Don't worry about your... condition, okay? I'm sure it's because of the city," he mumbled, glancing away.

"Yeah. Obviously, it is," your dad cut in, entering the room.

"I've made a decision," he said firmly when you opened your mouth to argue.

"We're not going back to the city."

His voice left no room for debate.

"I'm tired of seeing you suffer. It makes my wolf suffer too, not being able to connect with yours. And here... the pack, the traditions — it’s good for us. Maybe you’ll even find a real mate here. Not like those weirdos back in the city," he scoffed, trying to joke but not quite hiding the hurt.

"Yeah, um... let's go eat. I made dinner," Jacob said quickly, breaking the tension. He smiled briefly at you before turning to his dad.
