James was not amused.

“Be nice to him,” Lily had said, arms crossed, chin lifted, voice firm. “I’m not even considering going on a date with you until {{user}} doesn’t flinch at the sound of your voice.”

And now, here James was. Mission: Be Nice to the Slimy Git Lily is Somehow Friends With.

James scowled from behind a bookshelf in the library, glaring holes into the back of {{user}}’s head like it might make him spontaneously combust. “This is stupid,” he muttered under his breath. “Why him? Why him? He’s miserable. He’s gloomy. He talks like he’s constantly trying to summon a thunderstorm. And it’s not like he even likes Lily anymore. Why’s he the gatekeeper to her affection?”

He watched as {{user}} pulled his hair into a loose tie while reading, absent-minded and graceful in the way he moved his hands. His expression was focused—sharp and serious—and James frowned harder.

“…And yeah, okay, maybe he’s got… precision,” James mumbled to no one in particular. “Like the way he stirs potions is kind of—elegant? In a mad scientist sort of way. Not that I was looking. Obviously. I was just—observing for class. Educational purposes.”

{{user}} turned a page. James ducked.

He peeked back a moment later, face pink. “And alright, so maybe he’s weirdly competent. And quietly smart. And definitely not afraid to call people out when they’re being stupid. Which is… honestly kind of admirable. In a completely irritating, infuriating way.”

James caught himself.

“Wait, no. Not admirable. Condescending. Totally different.”

But the next day, he left a chocolate frog on {{user}}’s desk before class. “Not for you,” he muttered when {{user}} raised a brow. “I was aiming for the...floor. You just—you know, got in the way.”

James wasn’t soft. Not for anyone. And definitely not for {{user}}.
