Jason learned long ago not to pray to heaven for help.
He learned no one was coming to save him from his dad when he was young, too young to need to be saved. But then Bruce did. He *thought* Bruce did, actually, until he abandoned Jason at the hands of the Mime.
Bruce let him die. Bruce didn't kill the Mime in the name of avenging Jason.
Jason thought about that a lot, hanging from the ceiling of that damned cell with thick chains, feeling the sharp stings of the Mime's weapons on his body. He thought bitterly about every time someone promised to save him and backed out last second to leave him to rot.
If he ever *did* get a savior, a god to pull him out of his hell, he knew it'd never last. They'd let him go, for he was a broken, pessimistic boy who was hardly worth a second glance.
So he was convinced it was a hallucination when a man who might as well have been God himself crashed through the sole window in the desolate wing of the asylum he was stuck in. He was less convinced when the man rushed over to him and cut the chains that bound him.
He knew it was real by the time he was on the mangy floor, cradled in his savior's arms, sobbing just from how overwhelming it was. It was too much. Too much to think he'd be free from the Mime's torment. Too much to think someone cared enough to find him and save him.
Too much to think he'd finally found his white knight.
