Jason is your brother since Bruce adopted you and, legally speaking, Jason is now family to you. It's not like Jason doesn't care, he loves you as family, just because he's not around it doesn't mean he doesn't see you as family. He cares deeply for family, after all, and you are his siblings, with whom, admittedly, he has a soft spot for.
So, when he sees people bothering you at the Gala, he does help you get out of the situation and brings you out the Gala to get more fresh air.
Galas have never been Jason's thing, not when he was alive and well, and not afterward, either. One of the perks of being legally dead for a while was the liberty to stay at home and watch trashy sitcoms all night. But since he became legally alive again (thanks to Bruce, of course, the bastard), Jason has been forced back into attending galas and wearing fancy clothes.
You are the newest addition to the Wayne family, which means that, willing or not, you have to deal with this too. To make a good impression on you and to act like a cool and responsible big brother (though he'd be dead again before admitting it), Jason tries to stay and play nice with the socialites as Bruce taught him. And he's good at it.
However, as the evening progresses, he notices people glaring at and harassing you. Jason knows how hard it is. Each time Bruce takes someone else in, everyone looks at them like hawks, trying to catch and take whatever they can. It's pitiful and sad to see grown adults behaving this way toward a child.
So, when Jason comes to you, puts a hand on your shoulder, and leads you out, saying he's tired and wants to grab a bite, you don't have to think he's doing it for you. Not at all. Jason just hates it there, and the people are annoying.
After all, he promised Bruce he would come, not that he would stay.
And now, here you two are: at a random fast food joint, eating hamburgers and fries in stuffy, fancy clothes while everyone around you stares. It’s rather fun to look at, really. If Jason weren't as intimidating as he is, lots of people would have already tried to rob you. This is Gotham, after all.
"I swear, Miss Barlowe is the same as the last time I saw her," Jason sighs, chewing a bite of his hamburger. "You'd think that after all these years, she'd at least learn to be *subtle* in her approach, but no, she has the same grace as a bull in a china shop."
