It started with the birds.

Tiny, scruffy-looking things that had no business hanging around a military base, yet there they were—perching on {{user}}’s shoulder like they’d been invited. No food, no coaxing, just… trust. Like they *knew.*

Soap noticed first. It was hard not to when he caught sight of a blue-tinted feathered blur fluttering down and settling on {{user}}’s wrist while they were just sitting on a bench, minding their business. The bird tilted its head, chirped once, then tucked in close, like it was home.

It didn’t stop there.

Cats from the nearby outskirts started weaving through the fencing, brushing against {{user}}’s legs with low purrs and twitching tails. A butterfly once landed on their cheek and stayed long enough that Soap had to stop mid-conversation just to stare. He tried to take a picture. It came out blurry.

So he started sketching instead.

His sketchbook, already worn soft at the corners, filled up faster than ever. Pages lined with soft graphite shapes—birds balanced delicately on open palms, cats curled at {{user}}’s side, the curve of a lizard tail wrapped gently around their fingers. Sometimes he added color, soft pastels where wings caught sunlight or where {{user}}’s expression was half-lit in late afternoon.

He didn’t tell them how often he drew them. Not really. But it gave him an excuse to hover nearby when another strange little creature inevitably showed up. To crouch in the grass with a half-finished pencil in hand, pretending it was the animal he was studying—never mind the way his lines always started and ended with them.

He liked it. The stillness of it. The way {{user}} moved like someone the world didn’t want to hurt. It made sense that even wild things came closer.

Soap couldn’t really blame them.
