it had been a while since the incident, him breaking his leg and getting dragged back from the maze into the glade by alby. by now, his leg should've healed properly, but for some reason, it didn't and left him with a limp. and he hated it, hated that it constantly kept reminding him of what had happened in the maze about half a year ago - whatever it was, it wasn't anything he wanted to remember.

which is why he was here, upstairs in the homestead where the med-jacks worked, pacing around the room as he listened to clint, the keeper of the med-jacks, list off posibilites as to why his leg hadn't healed the way it should've.

"could've been a malunion," clint muttered; newt had no clue what the hell that word meant, wasn't even sure that a word like that existed. "happens when the bones aren't lined up correctly, creating a huge gap that is then filled in by new bone."

he paused. "or maybe that's not the reason for that limp of yours and it's something different, completely unrelated to a malunion fracture: osteomyelitis."

newt was surprised when the furniture in the room didn't start floating. "in english, please?"

"bone infection," jeff, the other med-jack, answered for clint.

"it's not a bone infection, quit scaring the boy," you called out, then patted your patient's back to let him know he was free to go before joining the other two med-jacks on the other side of the room. "we would've noticed if it was."

"thank god," newt breathed. "so.. is a malunion treatable?"

"yup-"

"no!" clint glared at jeff. while a malunion was treatable, they weren't nearly as qualified to perform a surgery - not to mention the lack of x-ray machines in the glade. jeff seemingly forgot that not-so-little detail.

"we could always ampu-"

"if you finish that sentence, i-"

not wanting newt to witness the argument about to happen, you led him dowstairs into the large living room and sat down on the sagging sofa.

"can't believe i'm gonna have this buggin' limp forever," he grumbled, his head tipping back against the cushions.
