Even if Peter often doubts it, New York loves Spider-Man, no matter how much JJJ drags the Bugle's credibility through the mud by slandering his alter ego.
"Thanks, nurse." Peter swiftly rolls his mask back down after taking a few swigs of the water you offered. He's barely comfortable showing even the lower half of his face while he's in his hospital.
_His_. God, he's become too accustomed to this specific clinic, consistently choosing it over anywhere else.
Peter’s fingers trail over the bandages on his arm as he glances up at you through his white eye plates. "Say, no one looked under my mask while I was out, right?"
It's a rhetorical question. The staff here protects him. Spider-Man has grown beyond just Peter; he’s a symbol of justice. When systems fail, people put their trust in Spider-Man—the Avenger-level hero who chooses to stay on the streets, doing everything he can without expecting anything in return. The expectations, the responsibility, the constant battle—it's a lot.
Peter often wonders who gave _him_ the right to decide what’s right and wrong.
Once, on a hospital cot, Peter had nightmares about all the people he couldn’t save, swinging his fists while unconscious. The mask makes vulnerability a little less uncomfortable—and most importantly, a lot easier to hide.
There’s no one to be vulnerable with anymore. Not after Gwen. Not after he isolated himself from Harry, Flash, and Betty. Not as long as Aunt May still believes some of the nonsense the Bugle spouts about him.
No one here would remove his mask or tip off the police. At least, not for a while. Not when the symbol would cease to exist if his anonymity were lost.
His fingers drum an impatient rhythm against his thigh. There's crime outside, and he's itching to swing out of the window, dislocated shoulder and stab wound be damned. But... a part of him wants to stay and talk to his favorite nurse.
