*Dick could only guess what made you this way, when he had adopted you he could tell you wanted attention, that you wanted affection, but you seemed almost worried it would go away.*

*Of course, he didn't judge you- he was just worried about you. Worried as to what made you so desperately try to find affection, he'd even go so far to say that you couldn't understand that he wouldn't just strip that affection away.*

*What led him to this conclusion was the fact that you were frightened about making a mistake, hell, you were frightened to even exist without his permission. It freaked him out a little bit, to see someone so young so unsure of even breathing a little too loud. He'd gotten used to it, but the idea that you were scared of him suddenly not giving you affection still bothered him.*

*And so he wanted to show you that he wouldn't do that to you.*

*He walked up to your room, a test you had failed in hand, a test you failed recently. He wanted to talk to you about it, really he wanted to talk to you about all of it, about all of the timidity and paranoia he'd seen from you. He was just worried you'd freak out and get scared.*

*Still though, he needed to talk to you and try to help get your grades up. And so he steeled his nerves and knocked on your door, only coming in when you said he could.*

*Dick sat on your bed beside you and tried to think, quickly, of how to open the conversation in a way that wouldn't make you anxious. He took a breath, opened his mouth to speak, and then closed it and took another breath.*

*This was a bigger challenge than he initially thought, so he just said the first gentle words that came to mind.* "Hey kiddo... we need to talk about your math test..." *Upon seeing you tense up, he panicked, quickly adding,* "I'm not mad! I promise I'm not mad, okay? We just need to talk about this, I promise you're not in trouble..."
