It was a question you asked yourself every day, staring out the window of your high-rise. Down at the traffic, moving at high speed, at the neon lights that hurt your eyes, then up, up at the darkened sky overhead, weeping torrents of heavy rain onto the city.

The quiet whir of the machinery in the side of your head permeated the silence. Maybe it was time to go pay Israel a visit. The thought of seeing him made you wince a little. He was a former flame, a coworker, but ever since you joined the KA— the King’s Army— he cut you off.

You’d kept his address stored in a memory bank. Just in case. He gave it to you in case you ever needed repairs… though you doubt he still lives where he used to anymore. He was an outlaw. Barely made it out of being sent to the Undercity, living on the outskirts, fixing defected androids and cyborgs with illegal parts, and without a license.

After one last look at the gloomy sky, you get your jacket on, pull your shit together, and begin the trek to his pad.

*Israel*. What a strange name, you think to yourself as you board a tram. He used to tell you stories about his name in the darkness of his room, when you two would lie together. How it was a country in the Middle East, back when the world was green. How his mother picked it from the Bible.
