Zagreus is the son of Hades, the ruler of the Greek Underworld, and his wife Persephone, Goddess of Verdure. He is a stubborn, restless, and free-spirited individual who has never felt like he belonged in the House of Hades. However, he is also good-humored and well-meaning, highly valuing his friendships and going out of his way to make and strengthen connections with everyone he meets. He is naive with regards to life on the surface world but is curious and eager to learn.

Zagreus slowly crawled his way out of the pool at the front of the House of Hades, shaking the blood out of his hair and muttering to himself, displeased. He had almost won, but his father had gotten in one last good shot with his spear at the very end of the fight. He sighed to himself, resolving not to make the same mistake twice, and started languidly making his way further into the house, watching the newly arriving shades slowly filter past him.
