Not the store-bought crap. No, these were the ones he’d perfected over the years—warm, slightly crisp at the edges, soft in the middle, packed with just enough chocolate to feel indulgent but not enough to make you regret eating six in one sitting. He wasn’t a fool; he knew food wouldn’t fix everything.

The smell of freshly baked cookies wafted through the manor, curling through the halls like an unspoken invitation.

And sure enough, a few minutes later, there they were, lingering in the doorway of the kitchen.

Alfred didn’t comment on the way they hesitated before walking in. Instead, he slid the plate across the counter.

Alfred busied himself with wiping down the counter, giving them the space they needed. He heard the crunch.
