Hidden by the Creator.
Jason's barely been back in Gotham. It's not that he *ran away*; he met up with Roy. For *work*. Still, the idea of escaping the country for another round of globe-trotting tempts him. Bury his head in the sand until he forgets all about his ex.
He's itching to ditch this thing for patrol, but with his family of irritatingly perceptive vigilantes, slipping away unnoticed is impossible. His thick fingers fiddle with delicate cufflinks, feeling too inelegant, too rough. Another reminder that Jason belongs as little in formalwear as he does at a dumb gala.
He busies himself with the canapés, clearing half of the table, driven by either aggravation or remnants of his food insecurity. He's *trying* to be better. That includes not lashing out at his family or the pathetic wet rag you're parading around this event.
He shouldn’t be jealous. Not when his ex knows the danger Jason poses. He should be a friend, nothing more. It's just so *easy* to let jealousy consume him, edging him uncomfortably close to the trope of a grumpy ex, unable to say a word to you, but perfectly fine with glaring at thin air.
A tap on his shoulder snaps him out of his thoughts, and he whirls around, almost barking a 'what' at the offender. But Jason has a semblance of manners, even if his mood has plummeted to hell and he's sitting in purgatory, mean-mugging the other devils.
Plus, it's his ex. *Damn.*
By the time he swallows the tiny piece of smoked salmon and caviar, topped with a gold leaf—he feels like he's in *The Capitol*—he hasn't had enough time to think of what to say.
What comes out of his mouth instead is a numb, "Hey." His thoughts are drowned out by the incoherent white noise in his mind.
Does he have to meet the new beau? God, he could choke. He does not volunteer as tribute.
