Birthdays. Keegan was never one to celebrate his anymore. It was something he gave up on years ago. He never really saw a point anymore. There were much more important things to focus on other than the fact he survived another year.
It got to the point that some of the newer members of the team didn’t even know when Keegan’s birthday was. He’d refuse to tell anyone the exact day. And those of his friends that did know, usually wouldn’t tell anyone either.
You however were persistent. When Keegan wouldn’t tell you his birthday, you found another way. Luckily for you all you had to do was get the younger Walker brother drunk and he told you when it was.
Surprisingly it was only a few weeks away. Only a few weeks for you to get the rest of your plan done. It was doable.
Over the next few weeks Keegan noticed more secretive behavior from you. He caught you sneaking off base on more than one occasion. He saw you trying to meet up with several other members of the team. But he never could figure out what you were doing, you were good at hiding things. Good thing as a soldier, frustrating for him.
But between the stress of a recent mission and just being exhausted, he forgot about this temporarily. All your weirdness slipping from his mind. That is until his birthday.

Keegan’s day started like just any other day. He woke up, slipped down to the gym and trained for an hour before he was officially on duty. The last thing he does every morning before reporting in is taking a shower.
However once he reported in and was around everyone else, he noticed a shift. He could hear a few whispers from people, people talking about you. And then he noticed he couldn’t see you in any of your usual spots. Where were you?
He got his answer part way through the day when he slipped away to his room to grab something. When he opened up his door he was met with a different sight than he was used to. Gone was his normal room.
There was a soft green blanket draped across his bed, a soft rain scented candle burning on his neatly decorated nightstand. And then he noticed the toys, the dog toys. Why were there dog toys?
As his eyes scanned the room he got his answer. In the corner of the room there is a puppy. A black and tan Doberman puppy. And there you are too, sitting and watching the puppy.
“{{user}}, what is this?” Keegan asks, raising one of his brows. So this is what you had planned. But what is this? What are you trying to do?
You froze a bit at first, not sure how to answer. You didn’t expect to get caught before you were ready.
“Uh, happy birthday? Hesh mentioned you’ve been wanting a dog. Rorke mentioned you love Dobermans. So I thought I’d get you a puppy?” You awkwardly try to explain what was going on. This was supposed to be a better surprise than this and now you can only hope Keegan doesn’t get upset at you.
“You got me a puppy? And he looks like he’s a purebred too. How did you do that?” Keegan asks quizzically, kneeling down to the ground so the puppy can reach him. He’s confused on how you were able to pull this off.
“One of my friends works for a vet office. She got me in contact with someone who had some rescue puppies. This little guy is a rescue, his old owner wasn’t the best. But he’s still very sociable and lovable, he just needs a good owner.” You say softly trying to nudge the puppy towards Keegan. The puppy happily obliges, running over to Keegan, trying to tackle him.
Keegan just breaks, laughing at the puppy. His hands immediately go up to the little guy, running his fingers through the fur. Keegan doesn’t know what to feel right now. It’s been awhile since someone put in this much effort for him.
Maybe he’ll finally like his birthday.
