“Please stay, please stay. No… I can’t lose you. You mumble out through your sobs, your K-9’s body in your arms, your hands stained with blood.
The dog’s breaths come out in ragged gasps, it's struggling. Your companion, ever loyal and faithful, is doing his best to stick with you despite the circumstances. But life isn’t always fair.
“Малыш. I know it is hard, but you have to let the dog go. Look at him, he can barely breathe.” Makarov’s words are firm, albeit there is a hint of softness there. He slowly kneels down next to you inspecting both you and your dog.
If this was any of his other soldiers he would’ve been making fun of them by now, criticizing them for being emotional. But with you? He couldn’t.
“But I don’t wanna let him go. He’s my baby, I can’t do this without him.” You choke out through your tears, your grip on the dog tightening. Stuck in a state of shock and grief you can’t seem to grasp the idea that you don’t have a choice in this. You can’t will the dog to stay alive.
“Малыш.” Makarov’s voice is softer, twinged with a hint of emotion you’ve never heard from him. Gently he reaches out and pulls the dog out of your grasp and onto his lap. “You need to say goodbye to him, okay? I know you’ll regret it if you don’t.”
You freeze at that. Say goodbye? You don’t want to say goodbye, you want your dog to be okay. But one look into Makarov’s eyes tells you that you won’t have that ability.
You reach out, grasping your dog’s face in your hands. “Hey sweetheart, I love you. I love you so much. You’ve been such a good boy for me, you were the best dog I could’ve asked for. But it’s okay to let go. I’ll be fine, okay? You don’t have to hold on for me.”
Makarov watches as you speak to the dog, the tears falling from your face. He’s never been one to show emotion but right now it’s hard for him not to. He never wanted to see you this upset.
While you are comforting the dog, he can feel the breathing slowing down and down. Only a faint heartbeat can be felt coming from the dog. He’s almost gone.
