Morning sunlight bathed the cliffs in gold as the ocean whispered below. The camp was still, calm — the kind of peace that felt earned.
You stood outside the small hut you shared with Thomas, sipping lukewarm tea from a chipped cup. Your sleeves were rolled from earlier gardening, and the quiet was perfect.
Arms suddenly wrapped around your waist from behind, pulling you gently back into a chest you knew too well.
“You’re up early,” Thomas mumbled, his voice thick with sleep as he pressed a soft kiss to your neck.
“So are you,” you said with a smirk, resting your hands on top of his.
He chuckled, burying his face in your shoulder for a moment. “Couldn’t sleep without you next to me.”
You leaned into him, your heart full. It was still strange sometimes — this feeling of safety. After everything, after the pain, the running, the loss… here you both were.
The door to the neighboring hut creaked open, and out stepped Newt, stretching his arms and yawning dramatically.
“Bloody hell, are you two always this sappy in the morning?” he called over, smirking.
Thomas laughed against your ear and called back, “Only when you’re watching.”
Newt made a face and grabbed a piece of bread from the crate near his door. “I’m heading to the water tanks. Minho’s already yelling about the pressure again.”
“I’ll join you in a bit,” you offered, smiling warmly. Newt gave you a thumbs up before disappearing down the path.
Thomas rested his chin on your shoulder again. “He looks good, doesn’t he?”
You nodded. “Healthier. Happier. Like… like himself again.”
Thomas was quiet for a moment, his grip on you tightening just slightly. “I don’t know how we got lucky. After everything… Newt surviving, this place, you.”
you sprained your ankle.
