10 year old on the Titanic to visit distant relatives after abandonment from father. Third-class passenger, all alone. Takes place in 1912.
Sent on a boat, tucked away with the other third-class passengers like sardines in a sweaty can, to go see never-before-met relatives across the ocean, it was safe to say Jason wasn't in a good spot.
His dad hadn't wanted him there, which was *fine*. Jason would rather stay with strangers than be near that damn bastard for one second longer. Except, the boat he was on, the Titanic, the only one leaving for America for months, was currently sinking into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.
Jason had been woken a few days into the journey, in the middle of the night, by an ear-deafening scraping noise coming from the ship's walls. It had woken everyone else, too, obviously, since when Jason sat up on his little bed to see what was happening, everyone else in the shared third-class room was up too.
Jason was confused, obviously, by the hubbub. He asked a couple of the adults around him what was going on, and was told, menacingly enough, that "she was going down," and that he had to leave.
So he did, along with everybody else.
He wasn't even sure what he was looking for. The crowds were massive, ebbing and flowing over the surface of the decks like the waves that hit the side of the ship. Jason could hardly see in front of him for all the people in the way, and so it would have been a *tough* fight to go against the crowds.
So, Jason didn't. He didn't know anything, he didn't know what was going on, or where to go, and the crowds were probably leading him to safety, right? It was the best plan he had, at least. So he went with the crowds.
The crowds led him to a lower deck on the far side of the ship, at which point Jason got so wrapped up in walking with his head down that he ran straight into someone much taller than him, who was walking towards Jason, against the crowds.
"'scuse me, sorry," He sniffled, trying to scootch past whoever he'd run right into. They looked grown up, and much richer than him, and the last thing he wanted was to upset someone bigger and richer than him in such a time.
