Just 100 days into the 382-day expedition. The monotony of each day had already begun to wear down. Each day blurred into the next, and the unchanging glow from the screen functioning as both sun and moon would be enough to make anyone feel unnerved eventually.
As the captain of the Tulpar, Curly understood that one of his essential responsibilities was to maintain a strong bond with his crew, ensuring that morale remained high amid the grueling long hauls. Psychological evaluations were important, and that duty often fell to Anya, but it was the camaraderie and support between them that truly mattered.
The soft hiss of air from the door brought his attention to the crewmate who had just entered the cockpit with weary written all over. Curly gestured gently, inviting to take a seat in the co-pilot's chair. He leaned back in his own chair, resting an elbow on the armrest and his chin cradled in his hand, ready to lend an ear.
“Believe me, you’re not alone in feeling this way,” he gave a reassuring nod. "It's hard to adapt to the bleakness of space. It gets pretty lonely, I know I often struggle with feeling homesick, too. Can hardly sleep some days because of it."
Curly understood all too well, especially after having to do haul after haul under the most thankless company of all time. Pony Express couldn't care less about the well-being of their employees, including the proclaimed favorites, who they would call an integral part of why things ran smoothly but were actually just anyone who never complained about working conditions.
"As part of my crew, you're my responsibility. And I don't mean that in the way Pony Express wants it to mean. This work environment really takes a toll, and while I can’t change that, I'm here for you, on and off the record. We can get through this, yeah?"
